What to consider before moving into supported accommodation
Moving into supported accommodation is a big decision. These are the things worth thinking through — and asking providers about — before you choose a home.
Your support needs
Start by being clear about the day-to-day support you need: personal care, meal preparation, medication prompts, overnight support or help getting out into the community. The right home is one where the support arrangement matches your needs, not just one with a spare room.
Your funding
Supported Independent Living funding pays for the support workers who help you in the home. It does not pay for rent, groceries, utilities or everyday living costs — those are usually paid from your own income, such as the Disability Support Pension. Specialist Disability Accommodation is separate funding for the building itself, for people with very high support needs. Understanding which funding you have, or are seeking, helps you compare options fairly.
Location and community
Staying connected matters. Consider how close the home is to family and friends, public transport, shops, health services and the activities you enjoy. A home that looks perfect on paper can feel isolating if it takes you away from your community.
The people you will live with
In shared living, compatibility with housemates makes a big difference. Ask providers how they match residents, whether you can meet potential housemates before moving in, and how disagreements are handled.
The home itself
Look at the practical details: bedroom size, shared spaces, outdoor areas, and any accessibility features you need. If you use mobility equipment or have specific accessibility requirements, confirm these directly with the provider rather than assuming.
Trying before committing
A short stay can be a low-pressure way to experience a home and its support before making a longer-term decision. Short Term Accommodation can sometimes be used this way — ask the provider whether a trial stay is possible.
