How to find SIL accommodation in Melbourne

Looking for Supported Independent Living accommodation can feel overwhelming. This guide walks through the practical steps — from checking your NDIS plan to visiting a home — so you can search with confidence.

1. Start with your NDIS plan

Supported Independent Living is funded through the Core Supports budget of an NDIS plan. Before searching for a home, check whether your plan includes SIL funding or whether you are gathering evidence to request it. A support coordinator or the NDIA can help you understand what your plan currently covers.

2. Think about where and how you want to live

Consider the suburbs that keep you close to family, friends, work, day programs and health services. Think about whether you would prefer to live on your own or share a home with others, and what daily routines matter to you. These preferences shape which homes are genuinely suitable.

3. Explore available homes

Look at providers' current homes and vacancies. On our Our Homes page you can see Santi's homes across Melbourne and Victoria, with photos, features and the general location of each property. Availability can change, so always confirm the current status directly with the provider.

4. Ask questions before deciding

Useful questions include: What daily supports are provided in the home? Who would I be living with? How are support workers matched to residents? What costs are covered by SIL funding and what is paid separately, such as rent and everyday living expenses? Can I visit and meet the people who live and work there?

5. Visit the home

Where possible, arrange an inspection before making a decision. Seeing the home, meeting potential housemates and understanding the neighbourhood helps you decide whether it feels right. Some people also try a short stay first through Short Term Accommodation.

6. Make an enquiry or referral

When you find a home that looks suitable, contact the provider to discuss availability and next steps. Participants and families can contact Santi directly, and support coordinators can use our referral form to start the conversation.
